School’s almost out, and the sun’s getting hot. Come join your neighbors in these fun Bakersfield community events that beat the heat!
Splash ‘n Spray
Take a dip in the NOR (North of the River Recreation and Park District) or Greenacre swimming pool for just $2.00 (free, if temps soar to 105). Bakersfield Recreation and Park District offers swim time at four pools; fees range from $1.00 to $4.00 (see the site for details).
Due to the drought, the City of Bakersfield won’t run its spray parks this year. But there’s relief: the NOR plans to operate all its spray parks, at least as long as water suppliers will allow it. Spray park hours are limited, and policies could change throughout the summer.
For more cool summer fun in Bakersfield, pack a picnic, throw down a blanket, and enjoy free movies with the family. Meadowbrook Park in nearby Tehachapi will offer a LEGO® building contest (with prizes!) before showing The LEGO® Movie. More films are scheduled throughout the summer.
Give your kids the retro thrill of a drive-in! Cinertain has great flicks lined up, including City Slickers, The Incredibles, and the classic film of romance, adventure, and fighting pirates, The Princess Bride. Audio comes through your car’s FM radio; or, use an FM radio app like this one for your mobile device.
Ride with the Moon
Go for a nighttime spin on a full moon bike ride. June 2nd, July 1st, and July 31st are the next dates to explore Bakersfield from a different perspective. The group travels at a casual pace from Beach Park to the Marketplace. Visit Bike Bakersfield for more details.
