Ready to Downsize? Here’s Where to StartTo downsize can seem like a monumental task – particularly if you’ve lived in your current home for many years. Depending on the size of your current residence, as well as the amount of items you’ve collected over the years, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

The good news is that there are some ways that you can tackle this project, without feeling like a deer in the headlights. Here is where to ideally begin:

First, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to plan. For instance, don’t try to sort through everything in just one weekend. Rather, downsizing can be a long process. So, allow yourself the time you need to sort through all of your items one by one. In doing so, feeling less rushed can help you to feel less stressed. This can also give you some time to reminisce.

The planning process should also entail where you intend to move. Here, for example, are you planning on staying in the local area, or rather to take on a new adventure in another city or state?

In either case, determine both the pros and cons of this next move – and then prepare accordingly. If you do plan a long-distance move, make sure that you’re familiar with the housing market in your intended area. Oftentimes, it can make sense to rent in your new locale for the first year or so, until you have a better feel for its housing market.

Any type of move can entail a multitude of emotions. So, it can be helpful to have a real estate professional on your side who can assist you with the business aspect of getting your current home marketed and sold.

If you’re planning to downsize this year, we can help. We’ll create a customized marketing plan for your property, and work with you throughout the entire process, so that you can focus on other pressing needs.
